Description
A hardy selection both northern and southern gardeners can grow outdoors year round, ‘Berry Awesome’ is a “very awesome” long-blooming perennial Hibiscus that is cold hardy all the way to USDA Zone 4a. Abundant, very large (8″ diameter), rich lavender-pink flowers with a deep cherry-red eye come all summer long on dense, mounding plants to 4 feet tall and 5 feet wide. The midnight green foliage is the perfect backdrop to make the flowers pop. Berry Awesome has been an “awesome” performer in our north-central Georgia gardens coming back reliably year after year. Not only you will enjoy this marvelous plant, your butterfly and hummingbird friends are going to love you for including it in your garden.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 feet tall and 5 feet wide, Berry Awesome Hibiscus makes a bold and beautiful specimen in the landscape or in large containers. Especially impressive in groupings of three or as a colorful hedge. Because it blooms all summer and into fall, and has such bold foliage, it makes a nice backdrop or centerpiece in flower gardens. A natural in butterfly and hummingbird gardens and for adding a tropical flare to your outdoor living spaces.
Suggested Spacing: 3 to 4 feet apart for hedge; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Hardy Hibiscus are very easy to grow. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil and plenty of sunshine, though some shade is tolerated. During prolonged periods of summer drought plants will appreciate supplemental water to bloom their best. Maintenance is minimal requiring just one pruning a year to prune plants back to ground when new growth begins to emerge in spring.
