Description
An exceptionally easy-to-grow and fast-growing North American native flowering vine that quickly covers fences (from top to bottom), arbors and other structures, the Shalimar Red Crossvine produces LOADS of fragrant, trumpet-shaped deep red flowers in spring reblooming in summer and fall. Attractive foliage remains evergreen in the deep South turning to reddish-purple in fall, with subsequent leaf drop in the northern regions where it will grow. A truly magnificent vine that deserves a spot in every landscape where it will grow. The hummingbirds will thank you for planting this vine!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing up to 30 feet in height or length (however tall or long the support structure) and 4 feet or more in width, the Shalimar Red Crossvine is ideal for use to climb on and literally cover fences from top to bottom! Rather than grow along just the top of a fence, the vines cascade all the way down to the ground to entirely cover the fence! Also ideal for use to cover a trellis, arch, arbor, pergola or any other structure that will support the vine. A fine addition to hummingbird and butterfly gardens, red theme gardens, tropical look gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing:Â 3 to 4 feet apart to cover fencesÂ
Note:Â Â For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Bignonia Crossvine variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring. That said, this vine grows quickly so you might have to cut it back some before bringing it indoors.
Growing Preferences
The Shalimar Red Crossvine is exceptionally easy to grow in most any average, moist but well-drained soil of average to low fertility. It grows in full sun or shade however flowers heavier with more sun. We recommend at least 6 hours of direct sunlight for full flowering. Plants are quite drought tolerant when established. Pruning isn’t necessary, however the vines can be pruned after flowering to keep tidy.Â

My “Shalimar” crossvine arrived in beautiful condition as has everything I’ve ever ordered from Wilson’s. I delayed planting for a couple of days and planted it at the base of an oak tree with a clematis. So looking forward to seeing the red flowers this year. I selected this vine because it is a beautiful cultivar of a native vine. Little pricey because I could only get it in a 3 gallon but it arrived in perfect condition and has started to grow already. Shipping was fast and free. This is a great company with quality products and items that can’t be found anywhere else. I can’t wait to see the flowers.———————————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG

It took awhile for this plant to come back into inventory but Wilson sent me a notice and my order was fulfilled quickly. The plant arrived on time and in great shape. Unlike many mail order plants – this one had plenty of growth/leaves and a healthy root ball. Its October so it will be a few months before we see any flowers and some real color. SO far so good.——————————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG

Received this vine in excellent condition about a month ago. The packing and container construction were superb. The vine has since grown several feet and a few days ago started to set its flower buds.
Well done by all at your Garden Center.

I wanted a beautiful privacy screen that would attract the hummingbirds, bees and all. This vine has grown in two months, has already bloomed some, have had tons of rain and now should bloom more….probably could use a little fertilizer boost….I did read not to overdo though. The plant arrived very timely,, very healthy and ready to go! Thanks again Wilson Bros for your professional service!——————————-Thanks for the great review! We are so glad you are pleased! Beth | WBG

What a wonderful plant this is!!! After having it inside for about two weeks (this was in early March). I put it out on my balcony during the day when possible to harden off, and then after a couple of weeks transplanted it to a much larger pot on my balcony. This beautiful plant has never quit putting on new growth and new buds even in high winds an even in one awful night of snow. (I can’t bring in that heavy pot) It’s still growing and setting buds. I have seen this plant – about the same size, but in a larger pot – in a big box store for twice what I paid for this one gallon pot. The way Wilson Bros grows and ships their plants is remarkable.————————————–WBG Reply: Hi Eleanor, Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Shalimar Red Crossvine. These Shalimar crossvines are absolutely beautiful and much larger than I had expected. I ordered them unaware we were entering into an extended “extreme” hot spell where temps reached between 107-112 for many days in a row (my mistake!). The vines arrived during this hot spell, we planted them immediately because they were almost dried out due to the extreme heat. It didn’t affect them though, very healthy plants and the vines are thriving and growing beautifully! Will definitely order products from Wilson Bros again but will be smarter about when I place the orders in the future. Love them! ——————— WBG Reply: Hi Susan – Thanks so much for your review of the Shalimar Red Crossvines and for your many compliments! It makes everything we do even more worth the while. Glad to hear the vines are thriving and hope you enjoy them for many years to come. Let us know if there’s ever anything else we can help you with.
