Description
There just aren’t too many hollies out there that have bright, variegated foliage. The Golden Oakland Holly is one of the best we’ve seen, and it won’t go unnoticed in your landscape. As with its parent, the leaves of this cultivar have a distinct oak leaf shape but with creamy yellow leaves splashed with a little olive green at the center. A superb holly that you can grow as a large shrub or remove lower branches to form a very attractive small tree 15 to 20 feet in height, the Golden Oakland Holly makes for a fine focal point specimen and is perfect for framing the corners of homes and other structures or in privacy screen plantings.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 20 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide (depending on pruning), the Golden Oakland Holly is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or in single or staggered rows to form a solid privacy screen. It is excellent for framing the corners of tall homes or other structures. Great for use around swimming pools and other outdoor living and recreation spaces. The abundant crop of berries make it a welcome addition to bird and wildlife gardens and is a fine addition to holly gardens, cottage gardens and formal gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 7 to 8 feet apart for solid privacy screens and hedges; 18 feet or more apart for space between trees
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Holly is not reliable winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
The Golden Oakland Holly is exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained acidic soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Four hours or more of direct sunlight per day is suggested. It requires minimal if any maintenance when left to grow natural. That said, many landscapers will perform an annual pruning to maintain a more formal appearance or to control size.
