Description
Unique in that it reblooms up to three times in a year and is less aggressive than it’s Chinese cousins, the Blue Moon Wisteria, also called Kentucky Wisteria, is a North American native species adored for its long racemes of fragrant flowers and noted for its excellent heat and cold hardiness (USDA Zones 3a to 9b), which covers almost the entire United States! Â
Blue Moon Wisteria is a deciduous vine very similar in appearance to Wisteria frutescens ‘Amethyst Falls’Â but has a longer inflorescences. It is a less aggressive grower than some of the other wisterias, but is well noted for its excellent winter hardiness and ability to produce flowers even as far north as USDA Zones 3, as mentioned. The vine can grow upwards of 25 feet in height/length and features racemes of fragrant, pea-like, soft lavender-blue flowers with darker highlights and a soft yellow center…not the purple, solid lavender or solid blue color you might see pictured elsewhere on the internet. Flowers bloom in abundance all at the same time creating a dramatic floral display and sensory appeal in the landscape.Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing quickly up to 25 feet in height or length, Blue Moon Wisteria is ideal for use to grow up and over sturdy arbors, pergolas, and other over head structures that might benefit from the support of a flowering vine. Very nice growing along the tops of fences or rails or up tall columns or posts. Can also be trained to grow as a very attractive small, free-standing tree. As it often does in the wild, this wisteria can be grown up and throughout the branches of large trees without compromising the health of the tree.
Growing Preferences
Because Blue Moon Wisteria is a North American native it is widely adaptable to various soil types and thrives in a wide range of pH (4.5-7). We suggest a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility for fastest growth. The vine is happy in full sun or part shade however flowering will be diminished in heavy shade. If needed, prune in late winter to reduce the size. Can also be lightly pruned after the spring bloom.

This is my first purchase from Wilson Brothers. I found them when I was specifically searching for wisteria vines for my zone 4 garden. My plants arrived quickly, the packaging wasn’t fancy but it served its purpose, and the vines arrived in good health and in one piece. They’ve been in the ground for about a month now and are growing beautifully. Fingers crossed that they’ll survive our North Country winter and I’ll be on my way to that lovely English look I’m after for my front porch. I’m pleased with the purchase and would order from Wilson Brothers again.————————————————-We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! Thanks for the kind words and great review! Beth | WBG 🙂
I was really hoping to get one of the larger sizes, but they were out of stock. So I took the chance on the one gallon size. I anticipated being 2′-3′ tall, which is exactly what it was when delivered. As with other purchases from Wilson’s, it came well packaged so there was not damage to the plant when it arrived. It looked slightly wilted, but the accompanying literature instructs to water it, if needed (they gave instructions on how to determine this). It did need a slight amount of water, but I check it every couple o days to be sure. Being cold in our area I have not yet planted it, but In the approx. 10 days that I have had it, it has has filled out, grow and has a few flower buds already! Once it goes in the ground, I expect it will take off. I would recommend this purchase.———————————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come!
