Description
Native to Texas and the southwest down to northern Mexico, Muhlenbergia lindheimeri, what we call Big Muhly, is a beautiful and easy-to-grow ornamental grass that performs well throughout the southern tier of the country in USDA Zones 6a-11. Much like its cousins, it grows in a graceful upright arching clump…but much larger. The fine-textured clump of blue-gray foliage can reach 4 to 5 feet high and equally as wide with the pretty pink-tinged flowers that open to fluffy white panicles adding another foot in height. The pretty flowers are excellent for cutting and use in fresh or dried indoor flower arrangements. Low-maintenance and highly ornamental in the landscape, Big Muhly’s lovely flowers and graceful form is ideal for use as a specimen, grouping, or in large sweeps for a stunning display.
Muhlenbergia lindheimeri was named for Jacob Ferdinand Lindheimer, a German-born naturalist who has been called the father of Texas botany.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a clump to 6 feet tall and 5 feet wide, Big Muhly Grass is ideal for use as an specimen or accent in smaller garden spaces and home foundation plantings or in small to large groupings or drifts in larger landscape borders and on on embankments, hillsides and slopes, where its roots act as a soil stabilizer for erosion control. Makes a nice centerpiece in combination container gardens and is a fine addition to coastal gardens, rock gardens, ornamental grass gardens, white theme gardens and the Xeriscape (low water need). A lovely display for any sunny spot!
Suggested Spacing: 4 feet apart for mass plantings; 9 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Big Muhly Grass is exceptionally easy to grow and maintain. It is high heat, humidity, drought and sun resistant resistant. Make sure to plant it in a site with very well-drained soil. Add sand and or small gravel to the planting mix if necessary to ensure good drainage. Will appreciate moisture and a little organic plant food during the first growing season to establish itself, but after that is exceptionally drought tolerant and requires no fertilizer. Full sun is preferred for best flowering, however the plant will tolerate and still flower with some light shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for best flowering. If necessary, cut back foliage to ground in late winter before new growth begins to emerge in spring. Muhly grass is quite salt tolerant, which makes it an excellent choice for coastal landscapes.
